We help patients with hypermobility improve their quality of life.

What is Ehlers-Danlos syndrome? Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a group of genetic connective tissue disorders. Causes and symptoms can vary depending on the type, but the most common sign of EDS is hypermobility.

While there is no cure for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, individualized treatment plans can improve quality of life for EDS patients.

At Georgia Upper Cervical Chiropractic, we help patients with joint pain, ligament injuries, and physical dysfunction due to hypermobility.

Very flexible man stretching

Overly flexible joints aren’t a good thing.

Joint hypermobility syndrome, the hypermobility type of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, means the joints have a greater range of motion than normal. This can cause instability, joint pain, and a higher risk of subluxations, or dislocations, in EDS patients.

EDS can also cause stretchy or fragile skin. Patients with these types of EDS may bruise easily or have a difficult time with wound healing due to changes in the structure of collagen in the body. The more severe vascular EDS can cause serious side effects like ruptured blood vessels.

Treatments depend on your specific type of EDS.

Those with tissue fragility may benefit from topical pain relievers or medication management. Patients with common comorbities like scoliosis, fibromyalgia, osteoporosis, and migraines may need follow-ups with several providers to address layers of symptoms.

Hypermobility is best addressed with an individualized treatment plan that hits at the root of your discomfort. This may mean a combination of strategies that include physical therapy, stabilization exercises, and chiropractic treatment.

Can a chiropractor help with hypermobility? A chiropractor can help with hypermobility by using precise chiropractic adjustments to relieve tension in the muscles and bring joints back into alignment.

Is chiropractic safe for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome? Chiropractic is safe for Ehlers-Danlos syndrome if you have an EDS type that would benefit from cervical spine care.

The chiropractic management of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome also involves decreases in overall pain, particularly in patients with misalignment in the upper cervical spine or along the spinal cord.

At Georgia Upper Cervical Chiropractic, the chiropractic management of patients is guided by a series of imaging tests that allow us to be more precise in our adjustments. This is true for patients with chronic low back pain, lumbar dysfunction, neck pain, postural concerns, or EDS.

Our clinical features and providers are focused on a holistic approach rather than aggressive spinal manipulation that could do more harm than good.
